BROWN BAG MINUTES – January 9, 2008

The teachers would like to thank the parents for their generosity around the holidays and for all of your help in the play. The musical was a big success, hopefully a positive experience and growth for all the children.

If someone did not get a DVD of Mary Poppins, but would like to order a copy, please contact Mrs. Johnson. She will get you the contact information for the videographer.

Solar System - The children are currently studying the solar system. There is a field trip planned to the Planetarium at Santa Ana College. This will be on Monday, 2/4. Parent drivers will be needed. More information will come home soon and will include optional home activities on the solar system. We will be building simple rockets in the classroom and will need materials donated (or borrowed) for this project. Please look for a list on the classroom door in the coming days. The kids will be learning about motion, rotation, light, dark, gravity, etc. We will also be building robots from cardboard boxes. Holly Wert has graciously offered to help coordinate this activity (thanks Holly!) and procure some large boxes. Parents can help by bringing in smaller boxes, e.g. pasta boxes. More information will be forthcoming.

All of the kids are doing research projects related to the solar system. Parents can take them to the library for research or help with Internet research. There will be opportunities in the classroom for the kids to work on this project as well. Children chose to work on their own or with a partner. Each child or pair will create a project/model/report. Some sample topics include the sun, comets, stars, moons, specific planets, etc. Each child/pair chose their own topic.

The teachers are planning to hold a February meeting with the parents. This will be held in the evening and the purpose is for us to all re-group, ask questions, etc. More information will be forthcoming.

It is recruiting time, which means there will be parents here walking through the classroom. Just an FYI.

Our kindergarteners have daily plans now.

Success Maker – school wide computer program, started in November. It helps them to work on reading and math skills at their own level, geared towards each individual child. This is from 11:45 to 12:10 and is held on the computers in the library.

Classroom Cleaning Day – Saturday 1/19 from 9 am to noon.

Popcorn Factory – The second graders will run their own popcorn business every Friday morning in the classroom. This will be starting up soon. Popcorn will be available to all the multi-age kids for 25¢ a bag. The second graders work on math skills, consumer education, philanthropy (the monies that are earned are donated to a charity that the second graders decide on) and problem solving skills.

Restaurant Fundraiser will be held at Jojo’s in Brea on Wednesday, 1/30. A flyer will be sent home soon. Jojo’s donates a portion of their earnings that evening to our classroom. In the past, we have made about $100 or so. Every little big helps!

Valentine’s Day – We are trying to coordinate something with Morningside Retirement Community over at Brea and Bastanchury, possibly a visit to them.
