Chimney Challenge
A Project-Based Learning Experience
In keeping with the Mary Poppins theme, the teachers are asking every child to participate in a chimney-building project.
Here's how it works:
1. At home, talke with your child about structures. If you have a chimney at home, have them look at tis design. (The teahers will read different versions of The Three Little Pigs and point out the different structural house designs.)
2. Encourage them to think and create a desgin for their own chimney. They can draw, sketch, color, etc. their design(s).
3. Help them "sculpt" (build/create) their very own chimney. They can use any material suitable for school (i.e., clay, cardboard, paper & tap, sugar cubes, toothpicks, etc.). Get creative!
4. The chimneys should be between 5 and 15 inches tall.
5. Please encourage your child to title their chimney. It is, in fact, a work of art.
6. Older students (2/3)should write about their chimney. Optional for K/1. They should:
A) describe their piece, materials used, etc.;
B) explain why they chose the particular design;
C) explain the title of their project;
D) include reaction to this project.
7. Bring chimneys to class on Monday, December 17th
Gift Exchange
This time of year tends to be filled with the air of generosity and gift giving. With that in mind, we would like to hold an optional gift exchange this year. If you son or daughter would like to participate, please bring in a wrapped gift that costs $5.00 or less by Deember 19th. Please match the gift to your child's gender. (If you child is a girl, please bring in a gift with a tag that says "girl", likewise for boys.) Our gift exchange will be held on December 21st and should be a lot of fun.
